Two Ruta Maya Finish Lines? ComPol Says Police Have It Covered
Police Commissioner Dr Richard Rosado was on the ground this morning at the launch of the 29th Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge. He promised full law enforcement coverage along the entire four-day route but also did not hold back from throwing his full support behind the police team also taking on this year’s competition.
“I’m confident that they will complete the race, so we’re cheering for them along the way,” Rosado said. “We have police officers who are acting as cheerleaders, not only policing the event.”
Rosado explained the department has redeployed personnel from leave and administrative duties to ensure public safety along the river route. “Our intent is to police the event no matter where it stops. Our role is the safety of the spectators, the citizens, and the paddlers,” he said.
The four-day race began this morning at seven o’clock at Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio. However, controversy still surrounds the move of the finish line from Belcan Bridge to Grand Resort near Haulover Bridge.
Some paddlers maintain that their finish line will be the traditional Belcan Bridge. Rosado said this move can stretch police resources, but according to him, the department will “police the event no matter where it stops.”
