U.S. representatives arrived in Israel to salvage the fragile Gaza ceasefire after a new outbreak of violence left at least 30 people dead. The visit follows a Palestinian attack that killed two Israeli soldiers and Israeli airstrikes that killed at least 28 people in Gaza, threatening to derail the week-old truce brokered by President Donald Trump.

Reuters reports that residents in Gaza fear more bloodshed. “I felt my heart dropping to the ground, I felt the ceasefire collapse,” said one displaced Gaza City businessman.

Trump’s advisers Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to push the peace plan forward, while Vice President J.D. Vance is expected to join talks on regional security by Tuesday. U.S. officials will also meet Hamas representatives in Egypt to urge restraint and progress on the deal.

The next phase of the plan involves Hamas handing over the bodies of remaining hostages and forming a new governing body in Gaza without Hamas representation. However, Hamas leaders say they will not accept foreign control or disarmament, complicating the talks.
