U.S. Imposes Visa Restrictions on Central Americans Linked to CCP Influence

The United States has announced a new visa restriction policy targeting Central American nationals accused of working with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to undermine the rule of law in the region.

According to the U.S. State Department, the policy will deny entry to individuals who, while operating in Central America, act on behalf of the CCP by directing, funding, or supporting activities that weaken democratic institutions and governance. Immediate family members of those sanctioned will also be barred from entering the U.S.

The State Department said restrictions are already being applied to certain Central American nationals who have previously engaged in such activities. The move, officials noted, reaffirms Washington’s commitment to protecting economic and security interests in the hemisphere while holding accountable those accused of aiding China’s influence in the region.

The announcement follows increasing U.S. concern over Beijing’s deepening ties in Latin America, including in Central American nations that have shifted diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in recent years.

Belize remains one of Taiwan’s strongest allies in the region.

While Belize is not directly named in the restrictions, U.S. officials say the policy is designed to discourage Central American actors from aiding Beijing’s efforts to destabilise democratic systems.
