UDP Demands Full Investigation Into Guatemalan Military Aircraft Incursion

The United Democratic Party (UDP) is calling for a full investigation after a Guatemalan military aircraft flew near Lighthouse Reef Atoll and Caye Caulker on September 24th.

The party noted that Francis Usher, CEO in the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security, has confirmed Belize gave no authorisation for the flight. The UDP said, “The remaining question is whether the aircraft entered Belizean airspace.”

The UDP called Guatemala’s response insufficient, since its Defence Ministry stated only that its operations comply with the law without addressing where the aircraft flew. “Belize needs a specific account of the flight, not a general assurance.”

The party is urging the government to establish the aircraft’s route using radar and flight records, release its findings, and seek a direct explanation from Guatemala. It said a formal diplomatic protest would be necessary if the aircraft is confirmed to have entered Belizean airspace without authorisation.

The UDP linked the incident to Belize’s recent protest over the obstruction of Belizean nationals near Sarstoon Island, noting both countries have pledged to respect sovereignty, while Guatemala’s territorial claim remains before the International Court of Justice.
