UDP Protesters vs. Police Tension Flared at SSB’s Doorstep
United Democratic Party supporters gathered at the Social Security Board’s doorstep in Belize City today to show opposition to Belize Telemedia Limited’s proposed acquisition of Speednet/SMART.
The scenery quickly turned into a showdown with police. UDP protesters attempted to breach into the SSB compound not one, but four times.
The party argues the proposed acquisition will place too much control of the telecoms sector in BTL’s hands and expose Social Security funds to unnecessary risk. Protesters called on the board to reject the deal and accused the government of secrecy and poor consultation.
But before the protest could fully get under way, police detained Brian “Yellowman” Audinett in the Mesopotamia Division and held him at the Queen Street Police Station throughout the morning.
Audinett’s attorney, Orson Elrington, said his client was “being detained for being a member of a gang.” Elrington said that Audinett was in the middle of organising supporters when police arrived and took him into custody.
Commissioner of Police Dr Richard Rosado strongly denied that claim, stating, “That is the furthest from the truth.” ComPol Dr Rosado told News 5 that Audinett was detained for inciting violence through messages sent earlier in the day and confirmed that an investigation was under way.
By midday, Audinett was released and walked onto the Belcan Bridge, where party leader Tracy Panton had led the multitude calling for his release.
Audinett denied any threats of violence, stating the party’s protest was going to be “peaceful.” He directly told the police department to “Bring the evidence that I sent any text or anything on Facebook that we will have any kind of violence.”
Audinett said he will be seeking legal action against the police department. UDP protesters marched back to SSB’s doorstep, and they marked the end of their protest shortly after.
