UDP Stages Protest Outside BTL Over Speednet/SMART Deal

Dozens of protesters gathered outside Belize Telemedia Limited’s compound on St Thomas Street, Belize City, this morning. The crowd is protesting BTL’s proposed acquisition of Speednet/SMART.

The peaceful demonstration was organised by the Opposition, with protesters holding banners reading “Our future matters”, “BTL Board do the right thing” and “No secret deals”.

News 5 is currently on the ground covering the protest. The crowd is being heard chanting “Bacon must go!”

Yesterday, Opposition Leader and Party Leader Tracy Panton confirmed the protest, saying the party felt forced to take direct action as BTL’s board is expected to meet today to reportedly seek provisional approval for the deal.

On Monday, the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize called for a “halt” to any binding decision until full consultations are completed, warning against rushed and non-transparent decisions.

NGO Senator Janelle Chanona also issued a statement speaking out on the delicate balance between meaningful public consultation and national decision-making. While she did not directly address BTL’s proposed acquisition, her remarks came as discussions on the deal continue.

The protest is still ongoing since around 8 o’clock this morning. According to protesters, they have committed to enter the compound at 10:00 a.m.
