UDP’s German Tillet: “We’re Not Worried About Jose Mai, the Horse, or PUP”
German Tillett of the United Democratic Party (UDP) says he remains focused on his constituency duties while public attention continues to center on his political rival, Jose Abelardo Mai, who resigned from Cabinet in November.
The two contested as standard bearers for the Orange Walk South constituency in March 12th’s general election earlier this year. However, Mai secured the win under the People’s United Party (PUP) for another term.
The recent controversy surrounding Mai’s resignation from Cabinet puts into question the future of the leadership of the constituency. Tillett said he’s there doing his work for his people.
“I’m there working for my UDP constituents. What they will do with him is up to them. The people will see my work, and they will vote for my work. What the PUP does with Jose Abelardo Mai is up to them. It doesn’t worry me. It doesn’t matter to us,” he told News 5 while he took part in the party’s National Convention on Sunday.
According to Prime Minister John Briceño, Mai’s resignation was based on health concerns and the need for major surgery for long-standing injuries he sustained from falling off a horse. Briceño has maintained his despite cartel-related allegations raised against Mai, along with questions about a procurement of bulletproof vests under Mai’s former ministry, the Ministry of Agriculture.
While Tillett said he wishes Mai a full recovery, he reiterated that he’s “not worried about Jose Mai. We are not worried about the horse. We’re not worried about the PUP.”
