Ukraine Backs U.S. Peace Plan as Russia Bombards Kyiv

Ukraine has signalled support for a U.S.-backed peace plan with Russia, but key issues remain unresolved as missile and drone attacks continue to devastate Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is expected to discuss the sensitive points with U.S. President Donald Trump in the coming days.

Kyiv’s message followed U.S. and Ukrainian talks in Geneva on Sunday and subsequent meetings between U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and Russian officials in Abu Dhabi on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on X that the U.S. had made “tremendous progress towards a peace deal by bringing both Ukraine and Russia to the table.” She added, “There are a few delicate, but not insurmountable, details that must be sorted out and will require further talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States.”

The urgency of a deal comes as Russia continues attacks on Ukraine, with missile and drone strikes overnight killing at least seven in Kyiv and disrupting power and heating.

French President Emmanuel Macron said there are aspects of the U.S.-proposed plan that “deserve to be discussed, negotiated, [and] improved… We want peace, but we don’t want a peace that would be a capitulation.”

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said any revised peace plan must stay true to the agreements reached between Putin and Trump at the Alaska summit.
