Unanimous Caucus Vote Questioned After Perez’s Absence
As debate over the proposed BTL–Speednet acquisition continues to stir political tension nationwide, another wrinkle emerged today when Belize Rural South Area Representative André Perez told us he had no idea the PUP’s Northern Caucus planned to publicly endorse the deal, a stance that quickly triggered internal criticism. The caucus said the vote was unanimous, but the move quickly drew fire from Cayo South’s Julius Espat, who blasted it as political interference that undercuts public protests and official reviews. Today, Belize Rural South Area Rep André Perez, a member of the Northern Caucus, told us he didn’t attend the meeting and had no idea the caucus planned to issue that endorsement.

“Yes, I recall getting a message, I think about two days before that there was going to be a Northern Caucus meeting and that there was going to be a presentation and that was the top topic. I’ve been to Cabinet and I’ve seen the presentation and on short notice, I was unable to attend and anyone no one can believe was should attend to the meeting. I was not aware we’re going to make an announcement or declaration, and we were not aware of it. We just thought, I was just thinking that we’re just going to sit down and have a presentation. I had no knowledge that declaration saying that we’re in support of it. It’s not about being neutral, it’s about looking at things the right way that yes, the consultations could have done better. I agree. Could have been done in a better way. But for now it’s water on the bridge, right? The minister of PUC has it that it is going to put a halt on it or temporarily look at different things and go back to the giant board. So that’s why I’m sending that.
