UNICEF Regional Director Concludes Official Visit to Belize

UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Roberto Benes, has concluded a two-day official visit to Belize. It is part of a broader regional tour focused on advancing the rights and well-being of children.

The visit forms part of preparations for the upcoming Caribbean Multi-Country Programme 2027–2031 and aimed to strengthen engagement with government leaders and regional partners.

During his stay, Benes met with Prime Minister John Briceño, Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Fonseca, and Executive Director of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, Colin Young. Discussions centered on current and emerging priorities affecting children in Belize and the wider Caribbean, as well as opportunities to strengthen regional collaboration and tailor technical support to middle-income countries like Belize.

According to UNICEF, the mission reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to accelerating results for children through stronger policies, improved systems and financing for child rights, expanded partnerships, and greater participation of children and adolescents in shaping regional agendas.

At the conclusion of the visit, Benes said UNICEF and the Government of Belize share the goal of ensuring every child grows up safe, educated, and protected, with the opportunity to reach their full potential. He also acknowledged progress made by Belize in advancing children’s rights and emphasized UNICEF’s commitment to maintaining a strategic and responsive partnership aligned with national priorities.

The Belize stop is part of Benes’ wider tour across countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, aimed at deepening collaboration with governments, development partners, and UNICEF country teams to improve outcomes for children across the region.
