Unlicensed Shotgun? Officer’s Role in Two Deaths Under Investigation

Last Friday, we brought you the troubling story of a deadly encounter between a civilian and an off-duty officer. That civilian, Darnell Arnold, reportedly showed up at the Santa Elena home of Police Officer Leonel Urbina, allegedly with the intent to harm him. In response, Urbina fired a shotgun, killing Arnold on the spot. But now, serious questions are surfacing: Was that shotgun even licensed? And could this attack be linked to Urbina’s alleged involvement in the stabbing death of Kevin de Paz in Caye Caulker? We put those questions to Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado.

“All I would say right now is that the incident did occur. The matter is under investigation. We do know that the target was a police officer.”

“And the weapon used at the time, was it illegal?”

Dr. Richard Rosado

“We do know that a pump action shot gun was used and the investigators are trying to ascertain if the person had a license for the firearm.”

Reporter

“We have been made to understand it has been scratched off. Can you confirm or deny that?”

Dr. Richard Rosado

“Not to my knowledge, but I do know that it is part of the investigation to ascertain the ownership of the shot gun.”
