Venezuelan Officials Say 100 Killed in U.S. Operation Capturing Maduro

Venezuelan authorities announced on Thursday that at least 100 people were killed during a U.S. military operation that Venezuelan officials say led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, marking the first official death toll released by the government.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said the casualties include military personnel and civilians, and that both Maduro and Flores sustained injuries during the raid.

The announcement came as Venezuela’s military held funerals in the capital for soldiers killed during the operation, with flag‑draped caskets carried in procession through a cemetery in the capital city, Caracas.

Cabello’s figure significantly exceeds earlier tallies that had identified 23 Venezuelan soldiers and 32 Cuban military and intelligence personnel among the casualties.

Interim President Delcy Rodríguez, who assumed power after Maduro’s capture, declared a week of national mourning for the military personnel killed in the raid.

In the United States, President Donald Trump had described the operation as “one of the most stunning, effective, and powerful displays of American military might and competence in American history.”
