Weekend Warriors Set for First Race of New Year
Cycling fans, this one’s for you. If you’re looking for something exciting to do this Sunday, you’ll want to head out to the Philip Goldson Highway, where cyclists will be back in action for the club’s Fourteenth New Year Race. So far, sixty‑five riders have signed up, and there’s plenty at stake, more than twenty‑five station prizes will be up for grabs as weekend warriors battle it out on the road. It’s shaping up to be a fast, competitive race that’s always a favorite with fans. We caught up with Club Chairman Troy Gabb Junior and last year’s winner, Henry Moreira, to hear what spectators can expect when the peloton rolls out on Sunday. Here’s that story.

“ This Sunday January 11th the Weekend Whereas Club, they have its annual new Year cycling Classic. This event is sponsored by Shell Helix Ultra. We want give a big thanks to Shell. This is the second year they have been sponsoring the event. Last year was a very exciting event and we’re expecting an even better event come Sunday. Event currently have roughly around 65 registered riders, so will be a very huge event. We have a significant amount of prizes and not only the prizes that I’ve sent said earlier, we also have a significant amount of station prizes. So this is what makes the race very interesting. So we’re talking coming from NG Hall to in Orange Rock to Suncast Plaza, we pretty much have roughly around 23 to 25 stations. Now when you hit Laville from Laville to Belize City each station prizes are a hundred dollars. So 9:00 AM sharp. That race will start. This race will not take longer than two hours, maybe two hours, 15 minutes to max. So I’m saying by 11 15, 11 20, the race will be finishing. So from 11 o’clock everybody could start coming out at the sun ca Plaza, right? That the finish line is right there.”

”Last year. When I win last year, the race made competitive. But from last year leading up to this year, I’m in far more shape than last year. And as I watch and I say most of the guys more shaped, yeah. Being a, yeah, I be a hard race, but at the end of the being a best man win, no, but I, to give myself a great chance of defending my title, right?”
