What Financial Legacy Will Mayor Wagner Leave Behind?

Mayor Bernard Wagner is preparing to close the door on three terms at City Hall, but one major question remains: will the next council inherit stable finances or another financial uphill battle? Wagner acknowledges that the council has faced its share of challenges, but says his administration repeatedly found ways to navigate difficult periods and keep the city running. We asked him to assess City Hall’s financial health as he prepares to hand over the reins.

“Belize city is never broke. We will always face challenges as a city. It is no secret. Belize City Council, contrary to what many people might say, we are in a good position. You never heard me complain about not meeting our salaries. Our main obligation is our staff. we have driven significant development in our city, in terms of infrastructure, social infrastructure. But we always face challenges as a municipality. You go through challenges, peaks and valleys. And you have to be able to navigate those financial challenges.”
