WHO Steps Up Response to Nipah Virus Outbreak in India
The World Health Organization (WHO) is closely monitoring a Nipah virus (NiV) outbreak in West Bengal, India, where two healthcare workers tested positive. NiV, a rare but deadly virus, has a case fatality rate of 40 to 75 per cent and can spread from bats or contaminated food, as well as through close contact with infected people.
WHO said in its latest statement that it is working with Indian authorities to implement enhanced surveillance, contact tracing and infection prevention measures. Over 190 contacts of the two confirmed cases have been tested, all returning negative results.
The organisation has deployed mobile laboratories, supported risk assessment and coordinated a One Health approach, which involves health, animal and environmental sectors.
WHO rated the outbreak risk as moderate in the affected region. “Based on the currently available information, WHO does not recommend any travel and/or trade restrictions,” the organisation said.
Meanwhile, the outbreak in India has led Asian countries to tighten screening measures at airports.
