Woman Says Husband Set Caledonia Village Home on Fire

A weekend house fire in Caledonia Village destroyed a family home, leaving a mother and her two children with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.

The mother told News Five the ordeal began when her husband of thirteen years became increasingly controlling and jealous in recent weeks.

“It’s been some weeks now that he started behaving like that, psychologically and verbally treating me bad. Telling me things that hurt. And I tell myself, Lord please give me strength, I have to take it for the sake of the kids. It was for them that I kept staying,” she said.

Speaking about the night of the attack, the woman described how the threats escalated before the fire. “So he was in Buena Vista when he started sending me messages threatening me, saying he would kill me and other things. I got scared for my life so I hid myself,” she said.

She says she reported the incident to police and gave a formal statement but claims she was never called back to sign any documentation and has received little communication since.

When her husband was released on bail after the incident, her fear turned to despair.

“I feel let down by the law, let down by Belize, because it’s like they don’t protect women. I don’t know what’s happening,” she said.

Now sheltering at a friend’s home with her four-year-old son and three-year-old daughter, the woman is appealing to the public for donations of clothing, school uniforms, shoes, and roofing materials as she attempts to rebuild.
