Women Who Gave for Us to Gain: A Meaningful Conversation on Open Your Eyes

In celebration of International Women’s Day, this morning’s edition of Open Your Eyes hosted a special women’s panel discussion under the theme “Women Who Give for Us to Gain.” The conversation highlighted the strength, sacrifice, and contributions of women who have helped shape Belizean society, while reflecting on the progress made over the years.

The panel featured three remarkable women: Lita Krohn, educator in Belizean history and culture; Kathy Esquivel; and Maureen Leslie. Each shared personal experiences and insights about what it meant to grow up and build careers as women in Belize, comparing the challenges of the past with the opportunities available today.

During the discussion, Krohn spoke about the importance of remembering the women who paved the way in Belize’s history. She emphasized that many women worked tirelessly behind the scenes—whether in education, community development, or family life—to create opportunities for the next generation. She also highlighted how understanding Belize’s cultural and historical roots helps young women recognize the sacrifices made by those who came before them.
Esquivel reflected on the evolving role of women in society and how perseverance and community support have played key roles in advancing women’s voices. She noted that while progress has been made, continued mentorship and empowerment remain essential for young women navigating today’s world.
Leslie shared her groundbreaking journey in law enforcement, recounting what it was like to work in a field traditionally dominated by men. As the first woman to serve as Deputy Commissioner of Police in Belize, she spoke about the determination it took to break barriers and the responsibility she felt to open doors for other women in leadership roles. Leslie emphasised that today, more women are stepping confidently into positions of authority, a sign of the progress made over the years.

Together, the panelists painted a powerful picture of resilience, highlighting how women in Belize have continually given of themselves—through leadership, service, and sacrifice—so that future generations could gain greater opportunities and equality.

The discussion served as a reminder that while significant strides have been made, honoring the contributions of women remains vital to inspiring the next generation of leaders. As Belize and the world mark International Women’s Day, the voices shared on Open Your Eyes reinforced the message that the progress women enjoy today stands firmly on the shoulders of those who came before.
