You Will Have to Pay Entry Fee to Watch La Ruta Maya Finish

If you want to watch the grand finale of La Ruta Maya at Grand Resort near Haulover Birdge, you’ll have to pay a fee.

Roberto Harrison, Vice Chair of the La Ruta Maya Planning Committee, said the race is privately run and depends on long-standing sponsorships and management arrangements to operate.

“This is not a cheap race to run,” Harrison said, noting that costs for police deployment, traffic control, and crowd management will remain largely the same at the new location, though some cost recovery is expected.

Concerns about fan access were raised before the decision was finalised. Elvin Penner, vice president of the Belize Canoe Association, told News Five last week that he believed the change could come with added costs for supporters. “I believe, and I’m almost sure of this, there will be a pretty hefty charge to enter the grounds… which will cut back participation by a lot,” he said.

While a final figure has not been set, Harrison confirmed that spectators will be charged an entry fee at Grand Resort, similar to other finish points along the race route.

An entrance fee has been charged at the Burrel Boom bridge for one leg of the race in past editions.

“Love FM has to cost itself and pay itself in a certain sense on what it can recover from the race,” Harrison explained. “So whatever arrangements Grand Resort and RSV have made, it’s there to make the race more viable and the least costly to run in that sense.”
