Floodwaters Moving Rapidly Toward Belize River Valley
Floodwaters from western Belize are moving downstream towards the Belize River Valley area faster than expected. Chief Hydrologist Tennielle Hendy said communities in the area are already experiencing the effects of the floodwaters. Bermudian Landing is nearing bank-full stage, while Double Run has already reached bank-full conditions. “The Belize River Valley Area is already seeing increased river levels. At Bermudian Landing it is already at almost bank full stage up to our last report. At Double Run which is a bit further down towards Belize City it is bank full stages. So, there are already seeing some of the flood waters travelling downstream.”
Hendy said the flood event is far from over, noting that water levels at More Tomorrow remain elevated at around ten metres. As a result, additional floodwaters are expected to continue flowing into the Belize River.
She added that the speed at which the floodwaters are travelling has been one of the most unusual aspects of the current event. While it typically takes about three days for water from More Tomorrow to reach the Belize River Valley, this time the increase in river levels has been observed in as little as 24 hours.
She warned that residents should not rely on the usual flood timelines. “This event does not follow predictable timeframes; it is moving a bit faster.”
Hendy also addressed concerns about Crooked Tree Village, urging residents to remain on high alert as water levels continue to rise. However, based on current forecasts, she said the village’s causeway is not expected to become impassable.
