Flood Warning Remains in Effect as Tropical Wave Brings More Heavy Rain
A flood warning remains in effect for parts of central, western and southern Belize as authorities warn that additional heavy rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours could worsen flooding.
Excessive rainfall associated with a passing tropical wave is expected to maintain flood conditions across the country through the next one to two days.
The warning applies to Regions 9, 11 and 13, particularly communities along the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountains, where flash flooding remains a significant concern. Residents are being urged to closely monitor weather conditions and exercise caution, noting that flooding can occur rapidly and without warning.
Among the rivers being monitored, the Sibun River remains at flood stage, sitting just below Hurricane Mitch levels at Freetown Sibun. The Belize River continues to recede at More Tomorrow and Double Run, while water levels at Crooked Tree Lagoon remain below normal. The Sittee River and the Temash River are also showing decreasing levels, although the Temash remains above normal.
In southern Belize, the Sarstoon River remains above normal, while the Moho River is above normal at Jordan and near normal at Blue Creek South. Gales Point Lagoon also remains above normal.
Elsewhere, the Rio Hondo, Mopan, Macal, Monkey, Deep and Rio Grande rivers are at or below normal levels, while the New River ranges from below to above normal depending on location.
