More than four decades after she first performed at New York’s Caribbean Carnival celebrations, Calypso Rose returned to the same stage this weekend, not to compete, but to be honoured as one of the Caribbean’s enduring cultural icons.

The Trinidad and Tobago legend received special recognition during the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute’s (CCCADI) 50th anniversary Afri-Carnaval celebration at Josie Robertson Plaza in Lincoln Center. The event also featured soca superstar Machel Montano.

The event made Calypso Rose’s third time performing with the organisation since her appearances in 1984 and 1994.

Despite performing from a wheelchair, the 86-year-old captivated the audience with the commanding voice and stage presence that have defined her career for decades.

Montano, who first appeared alongside her as a 10-year-old performer in 1984, joined Rose for a 15-minute performance before treating the crowd to a solo rendition of his hit Pardy.

After receiving the title of Queen of the Road, Rose told CNC3, “I feel very great to do that. Because this is something that I have been doing for years. And to know that at this same facility I’ve performed here twice. Twice before, years ago, and now for the third time, I am back to receive an award. I feel very happy and glad to see that they still remember Calypso Rose to come and see her in person at age 86. I am so happy and glad for them. May the good Lord bless them and keep them strong.”

The tribute celebrated an artist whose voice continues to carry the sound of Caribbean culture across generations and international stages.
