Don’t Send the Money: Doony’s Warns Customers About Loan Scam

Belize City business Doony’s is warning customers about a fake social media page posing as its instant loan service and tricking people into sending money online.

Customer Service Representative Chinique Kemp said several customers have come into the store reporting money sent to accounts they believed belonged to Doony’s. “We have observed that a lot of customers are coming in and talking to us about money that they have transferred, and we do not do business like that,” Kemp said. “We’re actually living in an era where technology now is being used to deceive people.”

Kemp said the fraudulent page claims customers can receive a loan after depositing one hundred dollars but clarified that Doony’s does not operate that way, and never has since they started operation over 20 years ago.

“We do do instant payday loans… We do not ask you to transfer any money into no account,” Kemp said.

Kemp confirmed similar scams have happened before and have been reported to the relevant authorities. Doony’s says all loans require an in-person visit, and the business never requests online transfers.
