Who Funds Belize’s Politics? Here’s a Warning on Political Financing 

A new report from the Belize Policy Research Institute (BELPRI) is calling for urgent reforms to political financing laws. It warns that the country’s lack of regulation leaves the door open to corruption and undue political influence.

The report ‘Money in Belizean Politics: Breaking the Regulation Gap’ says Belize remains one of the few countries without comprehensive legislation governing political parties and campaign financing.

During the report’s presentation, BELPRI Executive Director Dr Dylan Vernon warned that unregulated political donations can create opportunities for corruption.

“Funds can come from criminal activities, and politicians… find creative and illegal ways to tap into public resources and services for use in campaigns,” Vernon said.

He also pointed to what he described as a growing trend of public resources being used for political influence. While Belize has no system of public campaign financing, Vernon said government funds can still shape political support through constituency spending.

He also drew attention to the allocated financial budget for constituency support funds and the newer $6.2 million Constituency Development Fund are shared among the country’s 31 area representatives.

“The key point here is not if these funds are needed… It is who has the power to influence who gets what and what that means for political influence,” Vernon said.

BELPRI is recommending stronger transparency measures and campaign finance legislation to improve accountability and reduce opportunities for political corruption.
