Police Officer Admits Sexual Offenses Against Child

A police officer who once earned a family’s trust is now awaiting sentencing after admitting to having sex with a minor. Twenty-nine-year-old Police Constable Dexter Diego pleaded guilty in the High Court to four counts of unlawful sexual intercourse involving a girl who was 13 when the first offence occurred and 14 during the others. The case was expected to go to trial before Justice Nigel Pilgrim but ended within an hour when Diego accepted responsibility and pleaded guilty to all charges. Prosecutors said Diego, a family friend, secretly pursued a relationship with the child while serving in the Belize Police Department and without her mother’s knowledge. According to the agreed facts, the first offence happened between December 31, 2022, and February 1, 2023, at a relative’s home where the girl had gone to babysit. Three more incidents occurred between February and March 2023, including one on March 26, when Diego allegedly arrived at the child’s home in police uniform. Justice Pilgrim adjourned sentencing until September 8, 2026, and ordered a prison report, Social Inquiry Report, and Victim Impact Statement. Diego remains on remand.
