Fonseca Explains Absence from High-Level Washington Meeting

It was a high-level meeting touching on some of Belize’s most important foreign policy issues, from security and migration to trade and economic development. Prime Minister John Briceño sat down in Washington, D.C. with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, but Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca was noticeably absent. Today, Fonseca explained why. He says he missed the meeting because he is still recovering from triple bypass heart surgery.

“My doctors have not cleared me to travel yet. So I can’t travel and both I and the Prime Minister asked, Senator Courtenay, to join him in Washington DC.”

“How have you been feeling?”

Francis Fonseca

“Yeah, a lot better. I think getting stronger every day. So, you know, not one hundred percent yet, but getting there.”

After a two-month recovery period, Fonseca returned to office on July first.
