Autistic Teen’s Body Recovered After More Than Three Hours of Search 

A team of lifeguards and Coast Guard personnel recovered the body of the autistic teenager who was reported missing after jumping into the river to escape a bee attack. Xue Liu’s body was eventually found in the same area where she was believed to have entered the water. 

Reports are that the teenager was walking with her elderly father near the Haulover Bridge just outside of Belize City on the Phillip Goldson Highway when the pair were attacked by a swarm of bees.  

Lifeguards spent three to four hours free diving in water between 30 and 35 feet deep to recover her body. Tevin Conorque told News 5 that the recovery was challenging because of the depth and murkiness of the water. 

“To know that at least we could have gotten the body out for the family, you know, ’cause I know they pretty much feel this. It’s tragic that their loved one was in the water and she passed away due to the drowning. But thanks to the hope and the faith of my team, we managed to get the body out of the water and bring it forward to their brother. If you noticed, he is the one who grieves it the most,” Conorque said. “We also knew that there may be crocodiles in the water also with us.”
