Bus Shutdown Averted, But for How Long?

Bus operators have stepped back from a planned service disruption, giving government more time to address concerns over rising diesel costs. Weeks after warning that soaring diesel costs were making operations increasingly unsustainable, the Belize Bus Association announced this evening that its members will continue providing service while giving government additional time to address the issue. In statement issued today, the association says it first alerted the Ministry of Transport in mid-July to the challenges facing operators following the expiration of the fuel subsidy and had been seeking discussions to avoid any service disruption. They write quote “Today, the Minister of Transport requested additional time to prepare and table a Cabinet paper on Tuesday, September first, 2026, for Cabinet’s consideration of the issue. Our members have unanimously agreed to make this additional sacrifice in the interest of the thousands of Belizeans who depend upon public transportation every day.” End quote. While the immediate threat of a service interruption has been averted, the BBA says it is hoping for a definitive and workable solution when Cabinet takes up the matter next month.
