Where Did $150K Go? Immigration Audit Moves to Treasury

Auditors investigating more than $150,000 reportedly missing from the Immigration Department are now turning to the Treasury Department for financial records that could help determine what happened to the funds.

The Office of the Auditor General began its investigation in late June after being called in by the Ministry of Immigration. Auditor General Maria Rodriguez says the team is now collecting records from the Accountant General’s Department.

“I had mentioned to the management that they did not have the receipt on hand. So, unfortunately, we have had to go to the Treasury Department, the Accountant General Department, for records,” Rodriguez said. “The team is at the Treasury Department collecting the records that should have been at the Immigration Department.”

Rodriguez says the auditors are using the copies submitted to the Accountant General rather than the copies that should have remained at the ministry. She says those records could provide answers as the investigation continues.

The Auditor General’s Office had previously deployed a team to the Immigration Department to examine its finances and determine how the funds went missing. Rodriguez had also said the investigation was looking beyond one individual to determine whether anyone else may have played a role.
