Belize Welcomes 45 New Citizens

The Belize government formally welcomed forty-five new Belizeans, presenting nationality certificates to mark the country’s forty-fifth year of independence. Minister of Immigration, Governance, and Labour Kareem Musa delivered remarks at the ceremony.

He said the number of certificates presented was chosen deliberately to reflect the significance of the occasion. “Our ministry chose to present forty-five nationality certificates on the forty-fifth anniversary of independence because that number carries a powerful meaning. Each year of our independence represents a chapter in the life of Belize, and these certificates we present today represent another life joining our national story.”

He tied the ceremony to this year’s Independence theme, framing citizenship as something lived out daily by the people who choose to build their lives in Belize. “At age forty-five, a democratic Belize lives in the people who raise families here, who work here, build businesses here, teach our children, care for our communities, create art, grow food, serve others, and invest their hopes in this country. Belize lives in people who choose to make this great nation a part of their future.”

Musa acknowledged that for many of the new citizens, the ceremony simply formalized ties that had already existed for years. “Many of you receiving certificates today have already spent years doing exactly that. Your children may have grown up here. Your friendships, livelihoods, and memories may already carry the names of Belizean towns, villages, and communities. Some began their journey nearby in Central America or the Caribbean, while others began much further away. Each journey has arrived at the same place this morning: citizenship.”

“Our forty-five newest citizens now have the right to say the words of this year’s theme as their own: ‘Look at me, I am Belize.’ Carry those words with pride. Carry them with responsibility. Carry them knowing that Belize now claims you, just as you have chosen Belize.”
