Belize’s Parliament Looks to AI to Modernise Operations

Representatives from Belize’s National Assembly joined parliamentary officials from across the Caribbean for the “Applying AI and Digital Solutions to Modernize Parliamentary Practice” workshop at Florida International University earlier this month, focused on the use of artificial intelligence and digital tools in parliamentary work.

The sessions looked at how emerging technologies can improve legislative operations, information management and public access to parliamentary information.

Representing Belize’s Office of the Clerk were Acting Deputy Clerk Manuel Grant and Parliamentary Officer I Tiarrah Bedran. According to the National Assembly, both participated in discussions, practical exercises and knowledge-sharing sessions.

Grant also served as a panellist during a session on legislative digitisation standards, where he discussed common data standards, interoperability and the long-term preservation of documents. He also led a working-group presentation and discussion on AI policies.

The workshop covered document digitisation, data quality, cybersecurity, data standards and the use of commercially available AI tools. The programme also included a practical session on using tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for parliamentary work, with an emphasis on responsible use and security.

The National Assembly says its participation provided an opportunity to exchange experiences with regional counterparts, strengthen institutional knowledge and identify practical tools that could improve efficiency, continuity and public access to parliamentary information in Belize.
