What Does Belize Need From Belizeans?

September 21st has ended. The celebratory energy is simmering down, and most Belizeans are back at work today. But while the patriotic peak is still fresh, here’s a question for all those who raised the Belize flag high on Monday: What does Belize need from Belizeans? 

Prime Minister John Briceño’s speech during Monday’s 45th Independence Anniversary Ceremony held a message beyond celebration, which is that building the country has not only been the government’s responsibility. 

Her  framed national identity as something carried by ordinary Belizeans across every sector. “All across this nation, we can see Belize reflected in every culture, every language, and every community that contributes to our national identity,” he said. “It is to recognize that Belize lives within each of us. In the farmer who works the land, the fisher who ventures out to sea, the teacher who shapes young minds, the entrepreneur who creates opportunities, the public officer who serves with integrity, the union leader who looks out for the rights of our nation’s laborers, and all those hardworking Belizeans who contribute to the growth of our nation.”

He also put responsibility on Belizeans themselves while drawing attention to this year’s National Hero, Gwendolyn Lizarraga. 

He said Lizarraga “is a perfect example of one who used her skills and talent to build our nation. Through our actions and those of our generation, we can and should inspire our young people to believe in themselves and in their country.” 

Briceño said the next generation should inherit a stronger economy, a protected environment, better social conditions and a country that continues to uphold its national values. 

And that, he said, is part of what Belize should be showing the world at 45. 

“Under the theme, ‘Look at Me, I am Belize at 45’, we proudly declare and show to the world who we are. We are people whose spirit, resolve, possibilities, and potentials are bound,” Briceño said. 

“We are a small nation, but we possess tremendous strength… Wherever we go and whatever we accomplish, let us carry Belize proudly within us.”
