Downpours Could Drench Belize Through Weekend

Keep the umbrellas close and the weekend plans flexible. An area of low pressure near Honduras and Nicaragua could begin soaking Belize as early as tonight, bringing increased showers and thunderstorms through the weekend. Forecasters are not expecting significant tropical development, but some areas could receive more than four inches of rain. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Michelle Augustine explains when and where the heaviest rainfall could hit.

“The forecast for this weekend starting from as early as tonight, we do expect an increase in showers across the country. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase tonight, primarily along the coast and south at first and then we expect the activity to move over the entire country by tomorrow. That trend continues going into the weekend. So we expect a further increase Friday night, going into Saturday as well as Saturday into Sunday. We do have an area of low pressure that is currently near the coast of Honduras and Nicaragua. In terms of development, the models are not indicating any significant tropical cyclone development. So, the National Hurricane Center is not even issuing a potential tropical cyclone for this particular area. But, what is does possess is a large area of showers and thunderstorms that is currently affecting the eastern areas of the coast as I mentioned earlier, and we expect that activity to eventually reach Belize as early as tonight into tomorrow. At this time we are expecting at least two to four inches. It could higher in some places and less in some locations, depending on which area you are when the system actually moves across us.”

Again, people hosting outdoor events are being encouraged to plan for indoor activities.
