Excessive Rainfall Watch Issued as Belize Prepares for Rainy Weekend

The National Meteorological Service (NMS) has issued an Excessive Rainfall Watch for Belize, warning that two to four inches or more of rain could fall across the country.

The weather is being influenced by an area of low pressure near the coast of Honduras, which is associated with a large area of showers and thunderstorms.

Michelle Augustine, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at NMS, says showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase tonight before spreading across the country over the weekend.

“The models are not indicating any significant tropical cyclone development,” Augustine said.

Rainfall amounts could vary across the country, with some locations receiving more rain than others. Augustine is advising residents to stay alert and continue monitoring official weather updates as conditions develop.

She is also urging residents planning to attend weekend activities to prepare for wet conditions and consider alternative arrangements if necessary.

“Please make sure you have your contingency plans … because you do expect a rather wet weekend ahead,” Augustine said.

Augustine also advised residents to monitor updates from the National Hydrological Service, which provides information on potential flooding precautions.
