Secret Beach Set to Trade Generators for Grid Power
Secret Beach has grown into one of Ambergris Caye’s busiest destinations, but businesses still depend heavily on costly generators. A new partnership now aims to replace that familiar hum with reliable electricity from the national grid. Secret Beach may be known for clear waters and lively beachside businesses, but behind the tropical setting, operators have long faced a basic challenge: keeping the lights on. That could soon change. Belize Electricity Limited and the Belize Tourism Board are partnering to extend electricity services to the popular and rapidly developing area of the island. The project will connect Secret Beach to the national grid, giving residents, restaurants and other businesses access to safer, more reliable power. It will also allow establishments to move away from noisy and expensive fuel-powered generators, potentially lowering operating costs and reducing pollution. Reliable electricity could also transform how the destination operates after sunset. Better public and commercial lighting would improve visibility and safety, while allowing restaurants and other businesses to remain open later. The project could attract investment, create opportunities for local entrepreneurs and grow Secret Beach’s economy. BEL and BTB say they will consult residents and businesses as work begins.
