Could Darrell Bradley Challenge Gilroy Usher Sr. for Port Loyola?
Darrell Bradley has made no secret of his desire to return to elected office, this time on the national stage. A decade after his defeat in Caribbean Shores, could 2030 mark his political comeback? There is growing speculation that Bradley may enter the race in Port Loyola and challenge PUP Area Representative Gilroy Usher. We put the question directly to him. Here is what he had to say.
Darrell Bradley, Former UDP Mayor
“I cannot confirm that. I wouldn’t say that is murmurs. I have actually made it very clear that I do want to hold elected office in this country. I have held it twice before as mayor. I like the fact that politics gives you an opportunity to assist people and to contribute to human, social and national development and I have always been geared towards that kind of orientation. I have not said specifically, because I have not decided on any particular area. We have looked at certain constituencies that may be a possibility. But sometime in the future. I cant say in 2030 but sometime in the future my name will be on a ballot. I cant say in 2030 because I don’t know what will happen. But I know that sometime in the future, my name will be on a ballot again.”
Paul Lopez
“And do to that, you would have to spend time campaign. How open are you to that and does your busy schedule affect that any at all? We don’t see you on the ground as much as we see the potential candidates for the UDP, the caretakers out there campaigning.”
Darrell Bradley
“The nature of politics is different and what I find is that every political candidate, not only Belize, but elsewhere, there stories of how they come to power is different, everybody have different paths. Everybody has different strengths. Certain things I think I can continue to a national dialogue different from what somebody else contributes. Somebody may be more of a people person on the ground. I have certain strengths that I can promote to the Belizean people. So, I have always been a book person, someone with policy basis. I can come up with ideas. So I can contribute in different ways. The nature of politics in Belize though is that it is very personal and hands on and you have to walk the streets. That is something that does not exist in other parts of the world. I don’t think persons in larger societies do door to door campaign. It is the nature of politics in Belize, and I am prepared to do that.”
