UB Students Put Ethics Into Practice
Students at the University of Belize (UB) put ethical theories into practice through drama during a symposium in Belmopan focused on leadership, governance and citizenship.
UB President Dr. Vincent Palacio says the event gave students an opportunity to explore how ethical theories apply to real-life situations and hear from people who use or practise ethics in their respective fields.
“Here we have a seminar, a workshop of sorts, where the students come together to look at various theorists and see how these ethics theories apply in real life,” Palacio explained.
During one exercise, students acted out a scenario involving land redistribution, compensation for property owners and the government’s responsibility to balance the rights of disadvantaged citizens with those who already own land.
Palacio said ethics is a required course for every UB student because it applies to everyday decisions and responsibilities.
“It’s in everything we do. Ethics is important… you could imagine everybody needs to be ethical, and why we have rules and laws, and why should we follow these rules and laws, and what is our role as citizens in the country. So it’s an important course,” he said.
The symposium also featured a panel that included representatives from government, the unions and the Belize Police Department.
