Motorcyclist Breaks OW Traffic Warden’s Tooth in Assault

A traffic warden in Orange Walk Town suffered a broken tooth after being punched by a motorcyclist last week Friday. The Orange Walk Town Council condemned the assault and expressed concerns over hostility towards traffic wardens.

According to the OWTC, the incident occurred after the warden stopped a motorcyclist who had entered a one-way street against the direction of traffic.

The motorcyclist reportedly dismounted and confronted the warden before punching him in the face.

In a separate incident this past Monday, a female traffic warden also had a confrontation with a male business owner on Park Street, according to OWTC. The disagreement reportedly occurred while traffic restrictions were in place for work being done on Main Street.

The council expressed concern about the verbal abuse, intimidation and aggression its traffic wardens face while carrying out their duties, particularly when temporary street closures or road restrictions are in place.

OWTC said the restrictions are necessary to improve the town’s infrastructure and protect public safety.

“We therefore make a strong appeal to all motorists, residents, business owners, and visitors to exercise patience, understanding, and courtesy when encountering traffic restrictions,” the council wrote.

OWTC said traffic wardens help maintain order, enforce traffic regulations and protect motorists, adding that traffic wardens should be able to carry out their duties without being threatened, humiliated, or physically harmed.
