Briceño Guarded on Speaker Woods’ Rosado Statement

Ambassador Alexis Rosado resigned earlier this week from Belize’s team at the International Court of Justice, after mounting pressure over his continued role while facing sexual assault charges in court. A pointed statement from House Speaker Valerie Woods may have been the final push. Prime Minister John Briceño was asked about Rosado’s exit and about the Speaker’s statement.

Prime Minister John Briceño

“I think it’s a decision that he made on his part. And I guess he realized that he was creating a distraction as opposed to be able to continue to do the job to the best of his ability. So I want to thank him for making that decision.”

“Do you believe this affects the case in any way?”

Prime Minister Briceño

“I think that’s something you need to talk to the technical people. I would not be able to answer that question.”

Reporter

“What do you think about the statement issued by Valerie Woods?”

Prime Minister John Briceño

“I think I’d – whilst there are some issues that she made that are correct, I don’t think she was correct in many instances. But I want to leave it as I don’t want to have a public back and forth. That’s a decision that she made as an individual, not as the Speaker of the House.”
