Does Belize Recognise Maya Culture But Overlook Its People?

Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam says Belize must move beyond celebrating its Maya heritage and do more to recognise and empower the descendants of the country’s first people.

During the sixth annual Belize K.U.L.C.H.A. Symposium, Tzalam questioned whether Maya communities are receiving meaningful recognition and opportunities.

“Simply having representation of a people who acknowledge having Maya DNA does not mean equal representation or integration of Maya values in the national fabric,” she said.

She pointed to initiatives such as Mundo Maya and public expressions of admiration for Maya civilisation, arguing that cultural recognition alone does not guarantee meaningful inclusion.

Tzalam questioned where the opportunities are for descendants of Belize’s first people to sustain their cultural practices and live with dignity on their ancestral lands. “Where are the opportunities for the descendants of the first people to support these practices and live with dignity on their land?” she asked..

She also cited her own position as Governor-General, noting that she is often presented as an example of Maya representation in a senior national position.

“We say we have Maya descendants in professional categories, and even point out that the governor general is a Mopan woman,” she said.

She called for greater recognition of Indigenous knowledge and other non-Western perspectives, arguing that Belize’s colonial legacy continues to influence how the country understands its history and identity.

Tzalam said values such as community responsibility, environmental protection and caring for future generations should also inform how Belize approaches sustainable development.
