Activist Demands Transparency on Government Legal Fees
Social activist Jeremy Enriquez is calling on the Attorney General’s Ministry to disclose how much public money has been spent on legal representation in recent constitutional cases. In a formal Freedom of Information request, Enriquez is asking for a detailed breakdown of payments made to attorneys and law firms since January 2025, particularly in cases challenging Belize’s electoral boundaries. He argues that the public has a right to know whether legal fees are justified and whether the government is getting value for money. Enriquez also raised concerns about the lack of transparency in how external legal counsel is selected, especially when politically connected attorneys are involved. The request highlights growing public interest in government spending and calls for stronger accountability and good governance. The Attorney General’s office has fourteen days to respond, or the matter could be escalated to the Ombudsman.
