This year, Belize is celebrating a big academic win, sixty-four students are heading to Taiwan on full scholarships. That’s one of the largest groups we’ve ever sent, and it shows just how strong the partnership between Belize and Taiwan really is. Belize’s new Ambassador to Taiwan, Katherine Meighan, says the excitement among the students is off the charts as they grab this life-changing opportunity. And we also caught up with second-year student Devin Sabal, who’s studying Journalism and Mass Communications, to hear what the Taiwan Scholarship experience is really like.

“I was here studying twenty years ago, and when I was here we had a cohort of two persons. This year there was an orientation and we have sixty-four Belizean that have come and that, that are coming or have come. Excuse me, and are taking advantage of scholarships here with Taiwan. So you see the volume, you see the opportunities, and this is not in one particular area, this is in many different areas, and these persons are across Taiwan. So they actually also get an opportunity to be able to not necessarily only learn from the academics. And that top level academic opportunity that we know Taiwan offers. But we all, they also get the opportunity to learn from a new culture, broaden their horizons, all that stuff that really make you a human being and enable you to become the best possible person that you are in the future as well.”

“I joined this program because I joined this program because I wanted to expand upon skills that I was already developing in Belize, but at the time that I applied, I felt that I’d come to my limitations of what I would be able to do and what I had access to within the country. So I was of course very honored to receive the ICDF scholarship, and I am about, I’m exactly two years in now, and it’s been a journey more than anything I can say that. Taiwan is a country that’s great for the fact that it gives you the privilege of being able to make your life whatever that you want it to be.”
