20-Year-Old Shot in Corozal

Police in Corozal are investigating an attempted murder after a 20-year-old man was shot multiple times Thursday night.

Wilbert Jonathan Vellos, a construction worker, was rushed to the Corozal Community Hospital around 9:30 p.m. on April 16 with gunshot wounds to his body.

According to initial police reports, Vellos had just dropped off a friend, Christopher August, at his residence shortly after 9:25 p.m. While parked in front of the home, a lone gunman reportedly opened fire on Vellos, hitting him several times.

Investigators say the suspect then turned the weapon toward August and pulled the trigger. The firearm misfired, giving August the opportunity to flee the area without injury.

Vellos remains hospitalized as the investigation continues.
