Wilbert Vellos Hospitalized After Overnight Gun Attack in Corozal
Police are still piecing together what led to a late night shooting in Corozal that sent a young man to the hospital. It happened Thursday night as twenty year old Wilbert Jonathan Vellos was dropping off a friend, Christopher August, at his home. Investigators say a gunman suddenly opened fire, hitting Vellos multiple times. He was rushed to the Corozal Community Hospital, where he remains under medical care. Police say the attacker didn’t stop there. Moments later, the gunman turned the weapon on August and tried to fire, but the gun reportedly misfired, giving August the chance to run to safety. The shooting unfolds against the backdrop of heightened tension within the Vellos family. Wilbert Vellos is the grandson of Arnaldo Vellos, who was shot and killed in Corozal on October thirty first last year. Just last week, police charged two men in that murder. While authorities have not confirmed a link between the two cases, they say the investigation into Thursday night’s shooting is continuing.
