“I Will Miss Him”: Father Speaks After Son’s Fatal Crash

Thirty-five year-old Bryon Magaña’s father says his son left for what was meant to be a routine weekend trip and never returned following Sunday night’s fatal crash on the Trinidad–August Pine Ridge Road in Orange Walk District.

The accident claimed the lives of three people, including Magaña’s wife, 19-year-old Sherlyn Henriquez, and former work colleague turned friend, 29-year-old Selvin Cortez.

“I don’t know exactly what happened, if how they were coming, if they were drinking or what happened exactly,” said Magaña’s father, Polo Magaña.

He added that the couple often travelled on weekends and always returned home. “They always come back. This weekend they never did,” he said.

“I will really miss him. We will miss them,” he said. “We cried and cried when we heard the news last night,” Polo added, describing his son as caring and one to always check in on his parents.

Police say a red Ford F-150 was being driven by Cortez when it collided with a cane trailer being towed by a Freightliner truck.

“Investigations indicate that the vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when the pickup truck in which the deceased persons were travelling in is alleged to have collided into the left-front portion of one of the trailers,” reported Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith this afternoon.

Smith stated that the impact caused the pickup to veer off the road, “resulting in the death of the three occupants.”

The red Ford F-150 sustained extensive damage, with much of its structure torn apart. The cane trailer remained at the scene, lying along the roadside with its load scattered on the ground.

ASP Smith added that a toxicology report is pending to confirm whether or not alcohol played a role.
