NEBL Condemns Chaos in Defenders‑Rebels Game

Belize’s fiercest basketball rivalry is now under league scrutiny. The National Elite Basketball League is coming down hard on the behavior displayed during Friday night’s game between the Belize City Defenders and the Orange Walk Running Rebels at the Orange Walk Sporting Complex. League Commissioner Leeroy Banner says the altercation crossed the line and fell well below the standards of discipline and professionalism the NEBL expects from its teams. A full review is now underway, with the league warning that disciplinary action is coming. Officials have also issued an apology to fans, sponsors, and stakeholders, as they work to repair the damage done both on and off the court. News Five’s Shane Williams spoke with team ownership from both sides of this heated rivalry.

The NBA has Lakers versus Celtics, baseball has Yankees versus Red Sox, and the Spanish League has Real Madrid and Barcelona. Some of the biggest moments in sports are fueled by intense rivalries. Friday night’s Defenders‑Rebels showdown in Orange Walk boiled over, erupting into a benches‑clearing incident now under league scrutiny. It all unfolded after Ajang Aguek ill-advisedly went for the chase down block on Kenneth Perkins and coming out on the wrong end. Aguek’s teammates took exception to the unsportsmanlike celebration that followed and Bobby Williams rushed in first and pushed Perkins away. This led to both benches clearing and punches thrown. The referees ended up ejecting six Defenders and seven Rebels.

“The rivalry, the rivalry between Orange Walk stems years. We’ve always been two teams that pride ourselves in giving good products to our fans and we’ve always pride ourselves in doing business the correct way. So both teams having two of the top teams in the league, saw this game as a must win.”

That long-standing rivalry set the stage for what many expected to be one of the most exciting games of the season.

John Marsden

“I expected that game to have been at thriller, right? Both teams jockeying, both teams wanting to prove that we are the top dogs in this league. I expected that to be the game of the season, right? Unfortunately that happened.”

While emotions can run high in competitive sports, team owners on both sides say Friday night crossed the line.

“Obviously based on the outcome, they’ll definitely be penalties levied onto the players who made the mistake of, you know, things happen in basketball. We have seen it all the world, Malice in the Palace – the Ron Artest so I mean, things like these happen all over the world. It happens in the Euro League. So we’ve seen it. Unfortunately it happened and on Friday night at one of our home game in, and, I just wanted to tell the general public that, this is not a, this is not the norm for our NEBL league.”

Still, both franchises acknowledge the incident has no place in Belize’s premier basketball league.

John Marsden

“We do understand emotions play a role in basketball, but we should not let it go to that point. We pride ourselves in allowing the funds to know that it will not happen again.”

With the league’s decision expected imminently, both teams say they’ve already begun addressing the issue internally.

Troy Gabb

“We should be hearing back from the league about that situation by the end of the day today. But all in all I want to tell the fans and the public that yes we have been addressing it through over the weekend, and we want to ensure that these kinds of things don’t ever happen again, at least in our league.”

John Marsden

“Tonight we will be holding a team meeting for the Defenders letting them know our stance on this and where we plan to take this for our personal team, right? We are also await the decision from the league. We know suspensions will be levied. We’re anticipating that but again, we just, we are disappointed in the entire ordeal.”

As the NEBL completes its review, stakeholders now await word on possible suspensions and penalties, hoping the focus can quickly return to the game itself, rather than the fallout from Friday night’s fight. Shane Williams for News Five.
