Faber Accuses Government of Crime Complacency

With violent crime making headlines once again, Opposition Leader Patrick Faber is turning up the pressure on the Briceño administration. At a UDP press conference in Belize City today, Faber accused the government of losing its grip on public safety, pointing to recent killings, disappearances, and kidnappings as signs of a growing crisis. He argued that incidents of this scale would have once sparked immediate national action, and he didn’t just blame the government, he also challenged Belizeans, accusing the public of growing too comfortable with what he called weak leadership and empty assurances on crime.

“This morning we woke up to a young man being killed through the Boom Road, they found his body, Mr. Cambranes. Over the past week and a half, people have been missing, bodies are turning up in swamps, people are disappearing, kidnapping. I remember under the term of the Right Honorable Dean Barrow, and the various different persons who served as police ministers,  when you saw a weekend happened with two three murders, the people were in an uproar. And you got a response, not only from the minister responsible. I can’t even tell you who is the minister right now, he is a waste of time. Not only have we not heard from the people. Under the Right Honorable Dean Barrow, that would have been a national crisis. He would have locked all of you off in a room on Queen Street, the top brass of police and coast guard would have been locked down and we would come up with an immediate measure to address the crime and violence in this country. I feel that the reason why our Belizean people are soft, because you are soft on the PUP. And maybe you say, well they have little things happening here. Well let me tell you, every single thing that the PUP does, even if appears to be good, there is a hustle.”

Senator Faber says the United Democratic Party government will prioritize increased investments in national and citizens security.
