BelCan Bridge Works to Displace Businesses, Mixed Reactions Emerge

As the long-awaited replacement of the BelCan Bridge moves closer to reality, the ripple effects are already being felt along the Phillip Goldson Highway. Several small businesses, car dealers, and taxi operators are now being told to clear out, making way for a temporary bridge that officials say is critical to keeping Belize City moving during construction.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing has confirmed that preparations are underway, with Chief Engineer Evondale Moody explaining, “we will be placing a temporary bridge to alleviate the traffic congestion within the city.” But that solution comes at a cost for those who have long operated in the area.

While some are reluctantly preparing to relocate, others are pushing back, warning that the sudden move could hit their livelihoods hard. Still, not everyone is resisting. One car dealer, who has worked the area for years, struck a more accepting tone, saying, “It is fine, there is no issues with that… we will move on.”
