Belize Fund Awards $643K to Boost Fisheries and Coastal Livelihoods
The Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future has awarded more than BZ$643,000 in grants to four projects aimed at strengthening sustainable fisheries, supporting coastal livelihoods, and expanding Belize’s blue economy.
The largest grant ($500,000) was awarded to the Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association to support improved fisheries management through enforcement, education, and data-driven planning.
Three smaller grants target community groups and local enterprise. Barranco Botanics will receive just over BZ$43,000 to expand production of marine-based soaps using locally sourced seaweed. The Wabafu Fishermen Association was awarded BZ$50,000 to strengthen governance and promote sustainable fishing practices, while the Yugadan Fisherfolks Association Limited will receive nearly BZ$50,000 to support training and livelihood opportunities for fishers in Hopkins.
Executive Director Leandra Cho-Ricketts said sustainable financing remains critical to protecting Belize’s marine resources while supporting the communities that depend on them.
Established in 2022, the Belize Fund manages conservation financing tied to the country’s Blue Bonds agreement, directing resources toward projects that promote climate resilience and long-term environmental sustainability.
