Social Workers Examine Lasting Effects of Colonialism
The lasting effects of colonialism on mental health and social wellbeing are taking center stage this week at the 2026 International Social Work Research Conference hosted by the University of Belize’s Faculty of Health Sciences in partnership with Galen University and California Baptist University. The event brings together social workers, researchers, students and mental health advocates for discussions on trauma, healing and culturally responsive care. Participants are exploring how generational trauma continue to affect communities across Belize and the wider Caribbean. Their hope is that research and social work can help to create healthier and more empowered societies. However, the challenge remains seeing mental health wellness as something important to the development of Belize and not just a minor issue.
