35 Stann Creek Farmers Trained in Poultry Biosecurity

Thirty-five poultry farmers from across the Stann Creek District were trained on disease prevention and biosecurity on Wednesday. It is part of Belize’s continued efforts to protect its poultry industry from outbreak risks that remain active across the region.

Farmers received hands-on guidance covering “common poultry diseases, prevention measures, farm sanitation, and the importance of maintaining strong biosecurity systems to protect poultry production”. the Ministry of Agriculture said.

Lionel Irving of the Belize Agricultural Health Authority addressed the group on disease surveillance and focused on the role farmers play in early detection and reporting.

The training is particularly timely. Neighbouring countries Guatemala and El Salvador continue to battle ongoing avian influenza cases since 2025’s reported cases. Meanwhile, Belize eradicated the virus in 2015 and has remained free since.

The department described the turnout as reflecting “the growing interest in improving poultry management practices and safeguarding the industry.”
